David is playing stroke and is using a caddie.
David has correctly determined the relief area for interference by an animal hole.
Whilst collecting an appropriate club, the caddie drops a ball for David which comes to rest just outside the required relief area.
David lifts the ball and drops it himself, again the ball comes to rest just outside the relief area.
David lifts the ball and places it on the spot in the relief area where his drop first made contact with the ground. David now plays that ball.
David gets just 1 penalty stroke.        [REF: 4T1057]

Animal Hole

In a stroke round, Jill's ball is at rest on the putting green (after 4 strokes) and she has line-of-play interference by some temporary water on the putting green.
She marks and lifts her ball and correctly determines the nearest point of complete relief which happens to be 'off' the putting green, but in the general area.
She places the ball on that spot.
Before she can make a stroke, a gust of wind causes the ball to roll down a slight slope and come to rest about 1m (3 feet) further from the hole, but still in the general area.
Jill replaces her ball, takes 2 strokes to hole out then starts the next.
What is Jill's score for the hole?       [REF: 4M1042]

In a stroke round, Liz's tee stroke could be lost in a red penalty area or could be lost in the thick vegetation just outside that penalty area.
Liz declares and plays a provisional ball to the same area of the course.
Liz finds both balls in the penalty area but is unable to determine which one is which.
Liz estimates where her original ball entered the penalty area and compliantly drops a ball using lateral penalty relief.
Se now makes a stroke at that ball. She takes 4 more strokes to hole out then starts the next hole.
What is Liz’s score for the hole just ‘completed’?     [REF: 4M1041]

penalty area relief

Greg and David are playing as opponents in a match.
Both are searching for Greg's ball after an errant tee stroke. Greg finds a ball and declares it as his.
David then finds another ball and lifts it.
Greg now realises the ball he found is not his and the ball that David lifted was in fact Greg's original ball.
What is the correct outcome?       [REF: 4M1016]

lost golf ball

Greg and David are playing as opponents in a match that is set to start on the first hole at 9:00am.
David arrives at 9:02am and is ready to start. He is late as he had to support a fellow golfer in the locker room who had collapsed with a medical condition.
Greg arrives at 9:04am and is ready to start, but has no exceptional circumstances for being late.
What is the Ruling?     [REF: 4M1008]

Men Waiting

Liz and Jill are opponents in a non-handicap match.
For Liz's third stroke on a hole, she attempts a tricky chip to the putting green and unfortunately, her stroke only manages to create a divot just behind her ball.
Liz repairs the divot by folding it back and flattening it.  Thinking this might no be allowed, Liz undoes her 'handy work' and reinstates the original divot.
Liz now takes 3 more strokes to complete the hole. Jill completes the hole in 6 strokes.
Before either player starts the next hole, Jill requests a Ruling on Liz's actions.
A Ruling is made and Liz loses the hole.     [REF: 4T1071]
