ABOUT GOLF HELP
GolfHelp – Golf is a Dream
I am a retired Mathematics, ICT and Aviation educator and have always had a passion for sport, particularly Australian Rules Football, Golf and eventually the Rules of Golf and refereeing.
I am an average golfer, with a playing handicap of around 16-18 at the Glenelg Golf Club (South Australia), but thoroughly enjoy playing a couple of times a week, always confusing my ambitions and abilities.
I have lived in Adelaide, capital of South Australia, all my life (well, not quite, yet) but have been fortunate to travel both professionally and privately to many overseas places.
I have been to St Andrews, walked a few holes, but never played it … on my ‘bucket list’.
Speaking of ‘bucket lists’, during 2024 I am taking my son’s and son-in-law for a week of golf at Cape Wickham on King Island north of Tasmania in the treacherous Bass Straight. If you have never heard of it … look it up. Not a course where you improve your handicap, but none-the-less, one of the premier courses in the world.
I was a central umpire (referee) in the Australian Rules Football League (AFL) and after retirement from that part of my life and taking up golf more seriously (used to play a ‘bit’ at university !!!), it was a natural progression to take an interest in Golf Rules and Refereeing – always looking for a challenge.
I was selected to attend the 2019 Australasian Referees & Competition Management School (May 2019 Level 3 TARS) in New Zealand and came from that experience with an assessment of Distinction.
The passion to get more involved was infectious …. but wait ….. COVID comes on board and official events virtually became a thing of the past.
As a result of the COVID impact, to keep in touch with the Rules and unpacking complex scenarios, I created this site, built it from scratch and published it in 2021.
It was developed with a focus on Rules Quizzes and in time to include other useful information and resources but was never intended to replace or compete with other sites providing similar resources, but simply to complement them.
The site underwent several changes, taking on board comments from users.
With the release of the revised Rules of Golf, January 2023, significant changes needed to be made and to ‘get it right’ has taken some time, eventually being published on the 1st May 2023.
The focus has remained with Rules Quizzes, with a number of different forms of quizzes available. The ‘Who Am I’ ones are just good fun …. nearly 500 golfing identities are in the pool.
One major change is that users who undertake quizzes can monitor their progress over time.
To do this, they are required to be registered to login when taking quizzes. The information collected is strictly kept confidential.
The extensive question pool is growing every few days, so users can expect different question each time … you might get lucky though.
Questions developed vary in complexity but are designed so that all golfers can benefit.
To complement the questions, answer and explanations are provided along with the appropriate ruling reference and link back to the R&A’s online Rules of Golf.
They are designed with some life to promote interest to golfers of all persuasions, not just officials.
Users also have the facility to submit their own questions (Contact Menu).
Constructive comments and feedback are always welcome …
